What is BIMI and why does it matter?

When it comes to email marketing, staying ahead of the game is crucial. That's why it's important to pay attention to emerging trends like BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification). We will explore the concept of BIMI, its significance for marketers, and how you can confidently leverage it to enhance your email marketing and improve your email deliverability.

What is BIMI?

Updated in May 2023 by Google, BIMI is an incredible email authentication standard that empowers brands to proudly showcase their logo and a verified checkmark in the inboxes of their recipients. It offers a striking visual indicator of trust and authenticity, enabling recipients to effortlessly distinguish genuine emails from reputable brands.

To understand how BIMI works, it's important to grasp the underlying mechanisms. BIMI relies on two key components: Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) and Verified Mark Certificates (VMC).

DMARC is an email authentication protocol that helps prevent domain spoofing and email impersonation. It ensures that incoming emails are legitimate and align with the sender's domain policies. Implementing DMARC is a crucial step before diving into BIMI implementation.

A VMC is a digital certificate issued by a trusted Certification Authority like Digicert. It validates the ownership of a brand's logo and associates it with the sending domain. The VMC is stored in your DNS and is referenced by your email client to display the logo in the inbox. It's kind of like an email trademark for your logo (you need to acquire your logo trademark for a VMC anyway!)

Like other email authentication standards, BIMI is a DNS record that follows a specific format and resides on your sending servers. example bimi record? When a message is delivered, the recipient's email service checks the BIMI text file, along with its hosting location, to verify the message. Once verified, the BIMI file provides the email service with the location of the sender's logo, which is then displayed in the inbox alongside your verified checkmark.

Who supports BIMI?

As BIMI gains momentum, major inbox providers have started supporting this authentication standard. Companies like Gmail, Yahoo, and Apple are actively working towards incorporating BIMI into their platforms. This means that by implementing BIMI, you can potentially have your brand logo shown to millions of users who use these email services.

Significance of BIMI for Marketers

With the increasing prevalence of email phishing attacks and spoofing, it has become increasingly challenging for recipients to differentiate between legitimate and fraudulent emails. However, BIMI confidently addresses this issue by adding a powerful layer of visual trust.  A before and after BIMI graphic? By displaying your brand logo directly in the email client, you can significantly increase the likelihood of your emails being opened and actively engaged. BIMI empowers you to stand out in crowded inboxes, making your messages instantly recognizable and inherently trustworthy. As a result, you can expect higher open rates, improved click-through rates, and ultimately, better conversions.

The Benefits of BIMI

Deliverability plays a pivotal role in determining the triumph of your campaigns. When it comes to BIMI, adopting this email authentication standard can have a substantial effect on your email deliverability. Let's delve into the ways in which BIMI influences deliverability and understand why harnessing its power is crucial for your email marketing endeavors.

1. Better Email Deliverability

Email deliverability heavily relies on the reputation of the sender (You!). By implementing BIMI, you will see a measurable increase in your email deliverability.

Inbox providers, such as Gmail and Yahoo, consider BIMI as a positive indicator when evaluating the security and delivery of your emails. As a result, your emails have a higher chance of reaching recipients' inboxes rather than being flagged as spam or ending up in the dreaded junk folder.

2. Brand Logo and Verified Checkmark!

BIMI allows you to prominently display your brand logo and a verified checkmark in your customer’s inbox, creating visual indicators of trust and authenticity. When recipients see your recognizable logo and the checkmark alongside your email, it confirms that your email is coming from you. This enhanced trust can improve your engagement and conversion rates, as recipients are more inclined to open, read, and click through emails from trusted brands.

Additionally, your emails are less likely to be perceived as suspicious by other inbox providers, further increasing your chances of successful delivery to your customer’s inbox.

3. Mitigated Risk of Phishing Attacks

By implementing BIMI, you add an extra layer of protection against phishing attempts. The visual presence of your brand logo in the inbox helps recipients easily distinguish legitimate emails from your organization, minimizing the risk of falling victim to fraudulent messages. This heightened protection against phishing not only benefits your recipients but also reinforces your overall sender reputation.

4. Stand out against your Competitors

Standing out from the competition is crucial. BIMI empowers your brand to differentiate itself in the inbox by visually representing your identity. When recipients your logo compared to the generic icon, it grabs their attention and sets your messages apart. This increased visibility can result in higher open rates and engagement, ultimately driving improved email deliverability metrics.

To set up BIMI for your email marketing campaigns, follow these key steps:
