Top 1,000 global web brands email-authentication benchmark 2026 =============================================================== Status: Published 2026-08-17T14:58:10.517Z Audience: Technology, security, email, brand-protection and infrastructure publications Contact target: 40–60 technology, email, security, infrastructure and brand-protection publications Plain-language summary A public-DNS benchmark of the current Tranco top 1,000 domains. Every row is a direct source-domain observation, not an inferred company or brand-domain match. Key findings - 999 of 1,000 domains were observed during the recorded scan window. - Rank-adjusted DMARC adoption: Microsoft 365 92.6% (base 94) vs Google Workspace 94.2% (base 225). - Rank-adjusted enforcement among DMARC publishers: Microsoft 365 82.8% vs Google Workspace 87.7%. - Publishers without aggregate reporting: Microsoft 365 2.3% vs Google Workspace 4.7%. - SPF lookup-limit failures: Microsoft 365 5.4% vs Google Workspace 4.2%. - BIMI among enforcing domains: Google Workspace 35.5% vs Microsoft 365 29.2%. - Recognized gateways measured 89.2% rank-adjusted enforcement (base 98); gateways may conceal the underlying mailbox platform. - These are observational comparisons. They do not show that provider choice caused the differences. Embargo approach Share the complete methodology and downloadable row data with specialist editors; describe observed DNS configuration without treating a domain as an incident or performance score. Pitch angles - Scale: A current, reproducible public-DNS view of the top 1,000 ranked web domains, with every row downloadable. - Operational: Where high-visibility domains publish DMARC, reporting and SPF controls—and where public records show gaps. - Standards: Why direct DNS measurement can be transparent without being misrepresented as inbox placement or breach evidence. Methodology - Fetch and pin the current Tranco top 1,000, retaining the permanent list URL and a source snapshot. Tranco rank is a web-domain popularity signal, not brand value, revenue or company size. - Query public resolvers for DMARC, apex SPF, default-selector BIMI and MX records in one recorded scan window. Resolver failures are marked unobserved and excluded from denominators. - Parse policy, reporting, SPF record health, recursive lookup exposure, BIMI and observed MX operator with versioned rules. The full named-row CSV exposes the fields used for each observation. - Publish source rank, exact domain, observed state and measurement timestamp. Do not infer inbox placement, sender reputation, compromise or real-world phishing from DNS alone. Limitations - Tranco ranks domains, not companies or trademarked brands. This study calls the cohort a major-online-brand proxy and does not represent a proprietary brand-value ranking. - A parent company may operate multiple domains and a high-ranked domain may be infrastructure rather than a consumer-facing brand. - DNS configuration is not a deliverability test and does not show whether a forged message was sent, accepted or delivered. - A single scan is time-bounded. Domains can update DNS after the recorded window; resolver failures remain visible and excluded rather than being called absent records. Publication policy Named rows are limited to direct Tranco source domains and their observed public DNS state. The report does not assign a corporate owner, brand value, deliverability rate, reputation score, compromise finding or phishing incident to any row.
